The First Baptist Church of Pell City was organized in April, 1903. Charter members were: Mrs. John Cameron, Mrs. Martha Cameron, Mrs. B. A. Fite, Miss Nell Fite, H. A. Cornett, Mrs. H. A. Cornett, S. D. Kilgroe, Mrs. L. C. Kilgroe, Miss Dixie Kilgroe, Mrs. T. J. Kilgroe, Miss Daisy Kilgroe, M. M. Smith, Mrs. M. M. Smith, Charles Nunnelley, Mrs. Charles Nunnelley, Mr. Sank Miller, Mrs. Sank Miller, and Miss Jessie Miller. The first sermon was deliveredby the Rev. Burns, whose given name is not available, and he served the church as pastor until 1905. In 1904, the first church building was constructed on the area between the present sanctuary and Highway 231. Earliest associational minutes available placed the value of the church and grounds at $3,000.00. The three-room frame building with its steeple and bell tower was a source of pride to those charter members. The church was a member of the Coosa Valley Association until 1928, when it was transferred to the St. Clair County Association. The first major expansion program was undertaken during the time that Bro. Joe Bancroft was pastor (1937-39) and consisted of classrooms and more space in the sanctuary. Prior to that time, a pastorium had been acquired and it was located on the site of the Colonial Apartment complex. The present pastorium was built in 1948. Through the years, additional lots were added to the church property until in 1960 the final lot was obtained and the church owned the entire block. Presently, the church property consists of the entire block on which our Sanctuary, Education building and Family Ministries building is located, and also, the lot for our Pastorium, and 2 lots for our storage building and parking lot. The original little white church was used until 1950, but a larger building was planned long before that time with regular contributions to the building fund being made during World Was II when building materials were not available. By 1963, the need for additional educational facilities was seen and the education building was added. The music and educations programs were expanded in 1956 and have continued to be a successful part of the church program. A Youth Ministry and a Silent Friends Ministry have been added as well as full time secretaries. The sanctuary was remodeled in 1970 and again in 1991. In January, 1991, a new Family Ministries Building was dedicated. This three story building houses additional education space, pre-school, kindergarten, day-care, and a multi-purpose room for basketball, volleyball, large dinners, banquets or receptions, and a walking track. The construction included re-modeling of parts of the education building to enlarge office space, make a commercial kitchen and enlarge the fellowship hall. In August, 1979, the church called Rev. A. L. Courtney, Jr. as pastor. He retired as pastor in December 1999, after serving 20 plus years. In July of 2001, the church called Dr. John C. Thweatt as pastor. Other items of interest include: 1973 — Church Bell installed 1975 — First full time Minister of Music/Youth was called. May 1, 1983 — The church began having 2 morning worship services, which continue today. Sunday School has grown from an enrollment in 1940 of 125 persons, to enrollment in 2002 of 887 persons. Missions ministry has been important at First Baptist Church. We have had many who have helped with missions here in the United States, and several who have gone to the foreign mission fields. Also important has been our Bible centered education for members of all ages. In April of 2003, First Baptist Church celebrated its 100 year anniversary with a Centennial Celebration. Church membership has grown from the original 18 charter members to over 1100 and church attendance and participation continue to grow and develop. “To God be the Glory! Great things He has done!” |
